1526 - The Protestant League of German princes was established.

This league was a direct revolt against Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and the Catholic Church - particularly the Vatican...Its importance is Martin Luther wouldn't have lived long without the cover provided by these princes. And without the strength of Luther the Reformation would have died a quick death.
