THIS DAY IN HISTORY

December 29

1890 - The Battle of Wounded Knee: The last major conflict of the Indian Wars took place in South Dakota after Colonel James W. Forsyth of the 7th Cavalry tried to disarm Chief Big Foot and his followers. Some 300 Sioux Indians were killed by U.S. troops sent to 'disarm' them.

The Anglo-Franco-Spanish-American conquest of the American Indian is a sad, but natural occurrence...We can feel bad, and we can reminisce, but the reality of the situation is this: World history is the spread - as a result of military, demographic, biological or epidemiological conquest - of people over space and time.

The American Indians are no different than the Philistines, Lydians, Hittites, Sumerians, etc, etc, etc...People come and people go. Over time, our people will as well.

1778 - British troops, attempting a new strategy to defeat the American Colonials, captured Savannah, capital of Georgia, in some of the bloodiest fighting of the Revolutionary War.

The British ‘Southern Strategy’ was doomed to failure:

1. Colonial population centers were in the north.
2. France and Spain were neighbors to the south, and would do whatever it took to slap their European foe, helping the Americans by default.

1845 - Texas (comprised of the present state of Texas and part of New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming) was admitted as the 28th state, with the provision that the area (389,166 square miles) be divided into no more than five states "of convenient size."

America was getting closer to its 'Manifest Destiny.'

1934 - Japan renounced the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922 and the London Naval Treaty of 1930.

Seven years till Pearl Harbor...It’s truly amazing how powerful this tiny island nation became.  It's unfortunate for itself as well, because the price it paid for such a rise was the ultimate downfall.

1940 - In a radio interview, President Roosevelt proclaimed the U.S. as the "arsenal of democracy":  WWII.

It's too bad FDR's successors, modern-day Democrats, don’t see it this way.

1970 - OSHA was established by an act of Congress.

OSHA is an enormous drag on American production, which affects everything from household income levels to Gross National Product. Of course, workplace standards are necessary, but nothing is needed with such reach and punitive power as this bureaucratic monstrosity.

What happened to Adam Smith-style economic policy? Sadly, we have allowed pseudo-socialist economic policy to replace the tried-and-true genius of laissez-faire...Just wait until some real socialists get power.  Then we'll see just how fast they prove the genius of laissez-faire, and the abject failure of socialism.

Unfortunately, we're going to have to live through such proof before Americans give up on this monstrosity.

1998 - Two top Khmer Rouge leaders apologized for the deaths of as many as two million people during their regime in the 1970s, and asked Cambodians to forget the past.

'Forget the past'? You’ve got to be kidding me...This would be like asking the Jews to ‘forgive the Nazis.'

August 14

1281 - The 'Divine Wind' sunk an invading Mongol fleet off of Japan.

The 'Divine Wind' was a typhoon, which saved Japan from a likely Mongol onslaught, because there was little doubt if the Mongols reached land they would have conquered Japan...And every enemy who bothered to fight the Mongols paid dearly for not just giving up.

The invasion force consisted of 281 ships and 150,000 men, and after 50+ days of fighting they were getting the upper hand on the Japanese before the typhoon hit...Only a miracle could save Japan.

It is interesting to know, the Japanese do not call the WWII suicide-bombers by the name of Kamikaze's = 'Divine Wind'...The relationship is a loose English translation.

410 - Visigoth King Alaric sacked Rome.

Rome was on it's last leg, and accelerated the problems with the Goths (and all the other Barbarians) by allowing them in their ranks.

This 'sacking' can be directly related to this matter, because Alaric was trained by Roman General Stilicho - a Goth.

Ironically, it was Stilicho who was sent out to put down the Gothic force...After thinking it through, however, the Romans decided to recall Stilicho, and had him executed. Thereby killing their best leader, and the man who knew Alaric best.

Such was the Western portion of the Empire in the 400's...A shell of its former self, and barely clinging to its very existence.

1848 - The Oregon Territory was established.

The northern border of the U.S. was finally delineated, and a major source of contention between the U.S. and Britain was put to rest.

1900 - International forces entered Beijing to put down the Boxer Rebellion, which was aimed at purging China of foreigners.

I can't say I blame China for wanting to overthrow these foreigners, but China had no chance of success...Just about every world power was in the fight against it - powers with modern technology on their side.

Unfortunately, the only one who ultimately profited from this battle was Japan, who used this event as one more step towards its domination of the Far East.

Even worse, the Chinese haven't forgotten the way it was treated by the West during this time, and it has a long memory...There's little doubt they will be looking for a little payback as soon as they can.

1935 - The U.S. Congress passed the Social Security Act and President Franklin Roosevelt immediately signed it into law.

Social Security was created as a means to provide 'Aid to Dependent Children' (now Aid to Families with Dependent Children [AFDC]), unemployment insurance, and pension plans for the elderly."

A nice idea, and one which has become the National Noose around the neck of every living - and unborn - American.

1945 - Japanese Imperial Guards attempted a coup, which was put down:  WWII.

Even after 2+ years of continuous ass kickings, including two atomic bombs, many Japanese leaders didn't want to surrender...Thankfully these nuts were crushed.

1945 – President Truman announced Japan accepted terms for unconditional surrender, setting the stage for the end of WWII.

August 15th is considered VJ Day, but it was still the 14th in North America at the time of the Japanese surrender...It was August 15th in Japan.

1973 - The U.S. bombing of Cambodia came to a halt, marking the official end to 12-years of American combat in Southeast Asia:  Vietnam War.

I can't do this one...Hopefully we learned from our mistakes and never again fight a war without the objective of winning.

Sadly, the same Liberal scum who forced us to lose in Vietnam made a goal of 'stealing defeat from the jaws of victory' in Iraq, and due to sheer incompetence by Obama have gotten a double in Afghanistan. Make that a triple in Syria.  Make that a quadruple in Libya, make that...Ugh!!!!

1997 - Convicted Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh was sentenced to death for his part in the 1995 explosion which killed 168 people.

On June 11, 2001, this SOB was executed. Good riddance to murderous scum.

2000 - On the opening night of the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, President Bill Clinton offered an embarrassing triumphant review of his years in office, and exhorted delegates to propel Al Gore on the road to succeed him.

Gotta love Bubba turning Al's party into a Bill Clinton love fest...Imagine what he would have done if Hillary had won in 2016.  For that matter, imagine the 'Ode to Obama' Obama will give himself as well.

2003 - The largest blackout in North American history hit the northeast.

Picture of the Cause of the Blackout...Warning: Rated R.

April 17 (A Triple)

1492 - A contract was signed by Christopher Columbus and a representative of Spain's King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, giving Columbus a commission to seek a westward ocean passage to Asia - specifically India.

A huge event. Especially considering the Portuguese laughed him out of their court, as did the rest of Europe.

Of course Columbus found anything but Asia. What he did find, however, changed the world - and enriched Spain unlike any Western nation since Rome.

1824 - Russia abandoned all North American claims south of 54' 40'.

It’s a good thing this was an official act of the Russian nation, because the Soviets laid claim to any previous Russian lands which weren’t formally abdicated.

Try to imagine Stalin making a claim on any part of North America.  I'm pretty sure this would have been a problem...I'm also sure our friend Vlad Putin might be making hay in our current day, as well.

1895 - The Treaty of Shimonoseki: Ended the Sino-Japanese War.

China was beaten badly in this war, and the peace terms reflected it...Korea was freed from Chinese rule - though it's hard to consider being virtually handed over to Japan as being free, and Japan received many naval ports as well as an opening to five of China’s exclusive trade ports - routes of future invasion.

The Japanese Empire was growing up, and becoming more and more bold...The Russians were the next to feel their sting, then the U.S.

1521 - Martin Luther was excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church.

Excommunication was a serious penalty during this time...No Last Rites and no Heaven, and he was more or less kicked out of the European 'Community of Man.'

So, Luther founded his own community.

1951 - Mickey Mantle hit a home run measured a distance of 565 feet.

That's almost two football fields in length!

Mickey was truly a monster, and it's too bad his knees and booze kept him from being the player he should have been...He was one of  the best ever, but he should have been even better.

1961 - About 1,500 CIA-trained Cuban exiles launched the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, a failed attempt to overthrow the government of Fidel Castro.

1. It must be noted Kennedy was a strong anti-Communist and defender of the American homeland.

2. It must also be noted this invasion had honorable objectives, and it’s unacceptable others haven’t been attempted to depose a communist leader less than 100 miles off the American coast.

3. The plan was pathetic, and Kennedy dropped the ball by allowing the CIA to run it without military support.

4. The most disgraceful part of the episode is Kennedy crapped himself when it went bad, and turned tail.

1975 - The Khmer Rouge captured Phnom Penn, Cambodia.

This ended the Cambodian civil war and led to a period of absolute hell for the Cambodians...The Khmer Rouge was a communist organization unlike any before or after, and for the short period of time it ruled it proved to be maybe the most bizarre and deadly (in relative population terms) - which is quite an achievement considering the history of other communist countries.

April 15 (A Triple)

1865 - President Abraham Lincoln died, and V.P. Andrew Johnson became the nation's 17th president.

The great leader was dead...He was replaced by a good man, but a below-average leader - and a poor president.

The nation suffered as a result of this change, especially the South, where many were so happy to see Lincoln die. They would have been much better off with Lincoln in charge of Reconstruction, because he may have been able to keep the 'Radical Reconstructionists' in Congress from being as harsh as they were...Maybe.

But we weren't able to find out, and it wasn’t to be.

1923 - Insulin became generally available for diabetics.

There is no way to quantify the value of this event...In America alone there are over 18 million diabetics, and who knows how many either are or will become insulin dependent.

Thankfully insulin was discovered in an age of sanity instead of now, because it would likely never make it past the FDA, would be taken off the market due to side effects, or have an insane cost.

1947 - Jackie Robinson became the first black player to play Major League Baseball - for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

JACKIE IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN AMERICAN HISTORY!!! And is the second most important black American - second only to President Obama.

This is no slight on MLK, George Washington Carver, Booker T. Washington, etc. It is what it is, and sports plays an enormous role in American culture - Jackie Robinson should be acknowledged as such...Also, I hope you understand, even though I'm not a fan of Obama's politics there is no way to deny his place in American history.

1861 - President Lincoln sent Congress a message recognizing a state of war with the Southern states and calling for 75,000 volunteer soldiers:  U.S. Civil War.

He knew it was coming, but couldn’t believe it when the war started...Bush was stunned for 30 minutes when 9/11 hit, but Lincoln was for two days before he went into action. Can you imagine if the Liberal Lapdog Media were around during the time of the Civil War?

And by the way, 75,000 proved to be a terribly shortsighted number.

1945 - British and Canadian troops liberated the Nazi concentration camp Bergen-Belsen. The troops discovered 28,000 women, 12,000 men and another 13,000 unburied bodies:  WWII.

The Holocaust didn’t happen!! How can any human being believe this crap?

It's a good thing the Allies took many pictures, and the Nazi's kept such grand records of their crimes.

1998 - Pol Pot died at age 73, evading prosecution for the deaths of two million Cambodians.

Pol Pot was a butcher, but only a minor member of the 20th Century Mega-Murderer's Club, though his total is almost more impressive because his were 'earned' by using much less sophisticated killing tools (clubs, knifes, etc.):

USSR = 61,900,000
Communist China = 35,200,000 (may actually be around 80,000,000)
Nazi Germany = 20,900,000
Nationalist China 10,000,000
Imperial Japan, 5,900,000
Mao’s Pre-takeover Soviets in China = 3,400,000
Cambodia (Pol Pot) = 2,000,000

It's important to note, the USSR and Germany kept pretty good records of their killing stats, but China, Japan and Cambodia's numbers may be much higher than listed.

I highly recommend you read about all the 20th Century's
Democidal Nuts.
