THIS DAY IN HISTORY

January 1

1356 - The Pope published the 'Golden Bull' ('Bulla Aurea').

This was a very important document, which more or less acted as a ‘semi-constitution’ for the Holy Roman Empire. It stated each emperor would be chosen by election, the right of voting being vested in electoral princes (electors).

The reality of the electoral process was much more messy than this great edict wished, however, setting the stage for 500-years of political intrigue and wars for control of Central Europe...Lands which were in a perpetual state of infighting until Napoleon broke them in the early 1800's, and the German Empire was created in 1870.

5777 B.C. - Origin of the Solar Cycle.

4713 B.C. - Origin of the Julian Period.

45 B.C. - The Julian Calendar was introduced.

1 - The Christian Era began.

Different calendars throughout history are a source of much confusion among historians - as should be expected considering there are at least 30 different calendar systems in use in our day...Imagine trying to figure out exact dating on any of these, let alone extinct calendar systems.

On this blog, I do my best to use the accepted dates in the Western world...Which is where the initials A.D. come from - 'anno Domini' = 'in the year of our Lord.'

404 - The last gladiator competition in Rome.

I can't lie, I would have watched and enjoyed these games.

1610 - Simon Marius, a German astronomer, discovered the moons of Jupiter.

Marius should have officially reported this finding; instead Galileo claimed the finding on July 1 of the same year.

1863 - The Emancipation Proclamation, declared the previous September by Abraham Lincoln, took effect. It declared freedom for slaves in all areas of the Confederacy still in rebellion against the Union.

The North had very little control of the South at this time, which means there was no effective way of putting this proclamation into force...That said, the proclamation was an excellent political tool for Lincoln, as well as an additional battle-cry for the North.

1902 - The first Rose Bowl game.  Michigan crushed Stanford, 49-0.

The 'grand-daddy of them all' started a fantastic tradition of college football bowl games.

1906 - The British Parliament curtailed immigration for the insane, impoverished, criminal and diseased.

You'd think this would be common sense.  You'd think the U.S. would have a similar policy...And then you'd remember immigration has become more a tool to control the native population than one to help it - from both American political parties.

1912 - The Chinese Republic was founded by Sun Yat-sen.

China has never had anything near a republic, and certainly nothing resembling a democracy.  That said, Chinese civilization has been as successful as any in the history of mankind and I am not here to say they do it wrong.

1920 - The League of Nations convened for the first time.

This worked just about as well as the U.N. has.

1920 - The 'Great Raid of the Red Scare': 'Radicals' were arrested in 33 U.S. cities.

They could round up many more 'Reds' if they'd just go to each city's modern-day DNC headquarters.

1934 - Germany passed the "Law for the Prevention of Genetically Diseased Offspring."

It wasn't long till they started considering anyone who wasn't German to be 'diseased.'

1946 - Japanese Emperor Hirohito rejected the notion the emperor is a living god and the notion the Japanese are superior to other races and destined to govern the world.

A thorough 'whoopin' will do this to most people bent on conquest and subjugation...It's usually the only thing which works - something all freedom-loving people must always keep in mind.

1949 - The U.N. brokered a cease-fire in Kashmir granting it the right to vote on whether to remain in India or join Pakistan.

No vote has taken place, and the cease-fire is in constant danger of dissolving...A reality made even more dangerous by the fact India and Pakistan are nuclear powers.

1959 - Fidel Castro led Cuban revolutionaries to victory over Fulgencio Batista.

It's a disgrace President Eisenhower let this happen right off the shores of the U.S...It's an even bigger disgrace no succeeding president has righted this wrong.  And even worse that President Obama embraced the Castros.

1986 - Soviet television aired a five-minute greeting from President Reagan, and Americans got the same from Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in the first such exchange between the superpowers.

The iron fist of the Soviet Union was loosening.  It wasn't long until it completely crumbled.

1993 - Czechoslovakia dissolved, and the Czech Republic and Slovakia were formed.

As Liberalism takes over American popular culture, the memory of Ronald Reagan may shrink, but the people of Eastern Europe will long remember him for bringing down the Soviet Union and her hold on her neighbors.  This 'Velvet Revolution' has been the most successful of the previous communist nations.

1994 - The North American Free Trade Agreement went into effect.

Free trade is always good for the U.S...As long as it is 'fair' trade.  And as long as the deal isn't just a means to smuggle more foreigners in.

1999 - President Fidel Castro, marking 40-years as Cuba's leader, portrayed his Socialist nation as a defender of humanity against rapacious capitalism.

You'd think with such magnanimity Americans would be fleeing to Cuba, instead of vice verse.

2002 - Euro banknotes and coins became the legal tender in 12 EU states.

The Euro will ultimately fail without a united Europe, which will never happen.  Sadly, this process of failing is in the process of occurring.

December 20 (A Triple)

1803 - The Louisiana Purchase was completed with the territory formally transferring from France to the United States during ceremonies in New Orleans. This purchase effectively doubled the size of the existing U.S. With 827,987 square miles in the deal, a price translating to roughly $18 per square mile - under 3 cents/acre.

President Jefferson had doubts about the legality of making this purchase (he was a Constitutional stickler), but knew the opportunity had to be seized...The purchase provided natural resources - including people - and also eliminated a potential future enemy combatant in France.

1860 - South Carolina adopted an Ordinance of Secession, testing the concept of the state's right to secede from the Union.

The firing hadn’t begun, but this event properly marks the beginning of the Civil War, which as horrific as it was had to happen...The North and South had many problems that couldn’t be worked out politically (slavery was only one of them), and war was the only answer.

Thankfully the U.S. had the right man in charge at the right time...A true blessing throughout her short history.

1922 - Fourteen republics formed the Union of Soviet Socialistic Republics (USSR).

Lenin completed the conquest of Russia and her minor neighbors, and succeeded in creating the Hell State...And to make things even more pleasant, when he died it was passed on to the 'Man of Steel' - who perfected it.

1917 - The Russian Secret Police was formed under Felix Dzerzhinsky. He helped lead the Bolshevik Revolution and set up the secret police, the Cheka, which later became the KGB (also known as NKVD).

This proved to be an important step in the progression of a day-from-Hell for the Russian people - See 1922.

1924 - Adolf Hitler was released from prison after serving less than one year of a five-year sentence for treason.

How a country can allow a man convicted of treason to live, let alone free him, is amazing to me...Incredibly, he was only one of the 20th Century psychos who managed to spend time in prison for crimes against their nations, yet eventually took control of their governments. Lenin and Stalin are the other notables, but there were many others.

1933 - The German government announced 400,000 citizens were to be sterilized because of hereditary defects.

Nice. The nut-job German scientists had the perfect goon-squad take over control of their nation, and now they were allowed to put their insane Eugenic theories into practice...Lets not forget, these scientists were around long before the Nazis, and the Germans were by far the most advanced scientific nation at the time.

Sadly their legacy was one of great knowledge and even greater inhumanity.

2002 - Canada's Supreme Court ruled the book 'One Dad, Two Dads, Brown Dad, Blue Dads' and others with gay themes cannot be banned from kindergarten classrooms in Canadian schools.

KINDERGARTEN!?!? This is propaganda at its finest.

October 20

2011 - Muamarr Gaddafi and his son were killed by a U.S.-supported insurgency in Libya.

I'm all for killing anti-American dictators, but we need to be careful what we ask for.  In this case we killed an anti-American dictator who was willing to be paid off to keep the peace, and replaced him with - anarchy...Anarchy among those who hate the U.S. as much, if not more than Gaddafi ever did, and aren't as likely to be appeased by cash.

Needless to say, this wasn't Barack and Hillary's finest strategic decisions...Unless their goal was to create chaos, that is.

Which is entirely possible.

1534 - The English Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy, making King Henry VIII Head of the English Church.

Henry had no concern about being excommunicated from the Roman Church, and figured he could enter his own Heaven as the leader of his own church.

1600 (September 15 on the old Chinese Calendar) - The Battle of Sekigahara.

This battle cleared the way for the Tokugawa clan to establish themselves as the rulers of Japan...The Tokugawa Shogunate was the last in Japanese history, ruling until 1868.

1818 - Great Britain and the United States signed a diplomatic convention establishing a boundary between the U.S. and Canada along the forty-ninth parallel.

The northern border has been much more finite than the Southern border, which is nothing but a figment of our imagination.

1935 - Just over a year after the start of the Long March, Mao Zedong arrived with 8,000 survivors in Yunan, where he set up the Chinese Communist headquarters.

The Long March was over, but the long war still had 14-years...Other than the fact the Communist survived the 'march,' the most important result of this event is that Mao arrived as the undisputed leader of the Chinese Communists.

1944 - General Douglas MacArthur kept his promise to return to the Philippine Islands as he landed with American forces:  World War II. Two and a-half years after he said, "I shall return."

MacArthur insisted on returning, but the Philippines were unnecessary strategically. It was important to him, though, and neither FDR or the Army had the balls to tell him no.

1944 - The Yugoslav cities of Belgrade and Dubrovnik were liberated:  World War II.

’Liberated by Soviets’ = The ultimate oxymoron.

1947 - Hollywood came under scrutiny when the House Un-American Activities Committee opened hearings into alleged Communist influence and infiltration within the motion picture industry.

I know it’s not politically correct, but McCARTHY WAS RIGHT!!!!! The proof is in the post-USSR opening of their secret files.

1973 - Arab oil-producing nations banned oil exports to the United States, following the outbreak of the Arab-Israeli war.

This event should have opened our eyes to the necessity to lessen (eliminate) our dependence on the Arab dirt-farmers.

Our national economy and defense cannot be held up by any country or group of countries. We must drill on American soil and off-shore, and also greatly increase our refining capacity...Or we can keep our heads up our ass, and allow the 'Oil Bomb' to explode in our face - again.

1975 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled teachers could spank their pupils if the pupils were warned in advance their behavior could trigger a spanking.

We’d be a much better country if we returned to these days...The loss of control in the classroom is a detriment to learning, which is a detriment to American society.

Which is exactly what Liberals want.

1993 - U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno warned the T.V. industry to limit violence in programs.

Or what? Was she going to come after Hollywood with flame-throwers, using the Waco technique?

October 8

451 - The Fourth Ecumenical Council opened (it ended Nov. 1).

This was the fourth of seven 'infallible' councils, better known as the Council of Chalcedon.

Many issues were solved at Chalcedon, but none were bigger than that which solved the nature of Christ...The 'Chalcedonian Creed' describes the full humanity and full divinity of Christ, repudiating the doctrine of Monophysitism, which stated Christ had just one nature - the divine.

1871 - The Great Chicago Fire erupted while another deadly blaze broke out in Peshtigo, Wisconsin. Over four square miles of Chicago were destroyed, and the fire burned for three days. Over 250 people died and 90,000 were left homeless when one-third of the city was destroyed.

Such is the history of huge population centers built out of wood.

1917 - Leon Trotsky was named Chairman of the Petrograd Soviet.

It's impossible to minimize the importance of Lev Davidovich Bronstein (better known as Leon Trotsky) in the Russian Revolution, and it should be noted he played a much larger role than anyone other than Lenin...Trotsky actually led the fight before Lenin arrived on the scene.

FYI: Trotsky was a notoriously hard-hitting writer when he joined the Communist fight, and Lenin called him "The Pen" - in Russian: 'PERO'...Trotsky is no hero of mine, but I love the nickname and have long used it as part of my own.

1945 - President Truman announced the secret of the atomic bomb would be shared only with Britain and Canada.

That worked out well.

1956 - Don Larsen pitched the only perfect game in a World Series game, as the New York Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 2-0.

27 batters, 27 consecutive outs, no runs, no hits, no walks, no errors...The greatest pitching accomplishment on the greatest baseball stage in history.

1970 - Soviet author Alexander Solzhenitsyn was named winner of the Nobel Prize for literature.

It's hard to believe a writer could have such an enormous influence, but Solzhenitsyn's novels brought light to the situation in the Soviet Union.

Many in the West knew the USSR was a mess, but turned a blind eye to the problem...It was Solzhenitsyn who blew the doors off the lie, and showed the world the Soviet Union was not only a mess but also an abomination.

1994 - President Bill Clinton, responding to the massing of Iraqi troops near the Kuwaiti border, warned Saddam Hussein not to misjudge "American will or American power" as he ordered additional U.S. forces to the region.

I bet Hussein was scared. Scared for the lives of those working in Iraqi pharmaceutical plants...If you don't get that you aren't paying attention.

August 14

1281 - The 'Divine Wind' sunk an invading Mongol fleet off of Japan.

The 'Divine Wind' was a typhoon, which saved Japan from a likely Mongol onslaught, because there was little doubt if the Mongols reached land they would have conquered Japan...And every enemy who bothered to fight the Mongols paid dearly for not just giving up.

The invasion force consisted of 281 ships and 150,000 men, and after 50+ days of fighting they were getting the upper hand on the Japanese before the typhoon hit...Only a miracle could save Japan.

It is interesting to know, the Japanese do not call the WWII suicide-bombers by the name of Kamikaze's = 'Divine Wind'...The relationship is a loose English translation.

410 - Visigoth King Alaric sacked Rome.

Rome was on it's last leg, and accelerated the problems with the Goths (and all the other Barbarians) by allowing them in their ranks.

This 'sacking' can be directly related to this matter, because Alaric was trained by Roman General Stilicho - a Goth.

Ironically, it was Stilicho who was sent out to put down the Gothic force...After thinking it through, however, the Romans decided to recall Stilicho, and had him executed. Thereby killing their best leader, and the man who knew Alaric best.

Such was the Western portion of the Empire in the 400's...A shell of its former self, and barely clinging to its very existence.

1848 - The Oregon Territory was established.

The northern border of the U.S. was finally delineated, and a major source of contention between the U.S. and Britain was put to rest.

1900 - International forces entered Beijing to put down the Boxer Rebellion, which was aimed at purging China of foreigners.

I can't say I blame China for wanting to overthrow these foreigners, but China had no chance of success...Just about every world power was in the fight against it - powers with modern technology on their side.

Unfortunately, the only one who ultimately profited from this battle was Japan, who used this event as one more step towards its domination of the Far East.

Even worse, the Chinese haven't forgotten the way it was treated by the West during this time, and it has a long memory...There's little doubt they will be looking for a little payback as soon as they can.

1935 - The U.S. Congress passed the Social Security Act and President Franklin Roosevelt immediately signed it into law.

Social Security was created as a means to provide 'Aid to Dependent Children' (now Aid to Families with Dependent Children [AFDC]), unemployment insurance, and pension plans for the elderly."

A nice idea, and one which has become the National Noose around the neck of every living - and unborn - American.

1945 - Japanese Imperial Guards attempted a coup, which was put down:  WWII.

Even after 2+ years of continuous ass kickings, including two atomic bombs, many Japanese leaders didn't want to surrender...Thankfully these nuts were crushed.

1945 – President Truman announced Japan accepted terms for unconditional surrender, setting the stage for the end of WWII.

August 15th is considered VJ Day, but it was still the 14th in North America at the time of the Japanese surrender...It was August 15th in Japan.

1973 - The U.S. bombing of Cambodia came to a halt, marking the official end to 12-years of American combat in Southeast Asia:  Vietnam War.

I can't do this one...Hopefully we learned from our mistakes and never again fight a war without the objective of winning.

Sadly, the same Liberal scum who forced us to lose in Vietnam made a goal of 'stealing defeat from the jaws of victory' in Iraq, and due to sheer incompetence by Obama have gotten a double in Afghanistan. Make that a triple in Syria.  Make that a quadruple in Libya, make that...Ugh!!!!

1997 - Convicted Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh was sentenced to death for his part in the 1995 explosion which killed 168 people.

On June 11, 2001, this SOB was executed. Good riddance to murderous scum.

2000 - On the opening night of the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, President Bill Clinton offered an embarrassing triumphant review of his years in office, and exhorted delegates to propel Al Gore on the road to succeed him.

Gotta love Bubba turning Al's party into a Bill Clinton love fest...Imagine what he would have done if Hillary had won in 2016.  For that matter, imagine the 'Ode to Obama' Obama will give himself as well.

2003 - The largest blackout in North American history hit the northeast.

Picture of the Cause of the Blackout...Warning: Rated R.

June 10

1964 - The U.S. Senate voted to limit further debate on a proposed civil rights bill, shutting off a filibuster by Southern states.

THE REPUBLICANS BROKE THE FILIBUSTER AND PASSED THE BILL!!! Why don't American blacks know this? Why don't most Americans know this??

The Dems had a super-majority in the Senate (67-33), but didn't have the votes to override the Democrat filibuster, because they had too many racists in their ranks...Senators Bobby Byrd and Richard Russell were the two major Democrats against the bill, and the Dems could never have gotten enough votes to overwhelm them.

THE BILL WAS SAVED BY SENATE MINORITY LEADER EVERET DIRKSEN (R)!!!!!

"The time has come for equality of opportunity in sharing in government, in education, and in employment. It will not be stayed or denied. It is here!" - Sen. Everet Dirksen (R)

Final Senate vote:
Democrats = 44-23 (68%), Republicans = 27-6 (82%)

Things haven't changed, but the Democrats have miraculously managed to portray themselves as the 'Black Party.' They talk good (constantly), but have done very little for American blacks. If anything they have kept them in perpetual political slavery through the creation and propagation of Affirmative Action...Which should otherwise be known as the 'Democrat Party Plantation Program.'

The Liberal propagandameisters (Hollywood, TV, and K-College) have done a great job hiding this FACT.

1801 - The North African Bey of Tripoli declared war on the United States in a dispute over safe passage of merchant vessels through the Mediterranean.

Tripoli demanded protection money for 'safe passage' through parts of the Mediterranean, and the U.S. refused to pay...As a result, the U.S. sent it's fleet to the Mediterranean and kick ass on these pirates.

It’s ironic it was a group of Muslim terrorists (pirates) who first went to war with the new United States...Once a pain in the ass, always a pain in the ass.

1861 – The Battle of Big Bethel: The 'first battle' of the U.S. Civil War.

There were other skirmishes before (Fort Sumter was one), but this was the first land-based battle of the war.

1863 - The Battle of Brice's Crossroads:  U.S. Civil War. Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest defeated the numerically superior Union troops.

N.B. Forrest was an amazing tactical general, and the Union was very happy the Confederate leaders despised him so much. He was a self-made military man, without formal training, and by far the most impressive Confederate general in the Western theatre of the Civil War.

Oh by the way, he was also the first Grand Wizard of the KKK...Doh!

1916 – The Great Arab Revolt began, at Mecca and Medina.

The once powerful Ottomans Empire had completely fallen in the toilet...For almost 400 years the Turks kept the Bedouins at bay, but 'the frenzy' couldn’t be contained forever.

Sadly, history will show the fall of the Ottoman Empire to be almost as important as the fall of Rome, because of the worldwide problems allowed to spew out without Ottoman control of the region's lunatics.

1920 - The League of Nations convened for the first time.

Ugh...I don’t know what the female version of the Circle Jerk Group should be called, but this was the mother of the U.N.

1940 - Italy declared war on France and Britain; Canada declared war on Italy:  WWII.

Hitler thought he had a powerful ally, but instead Italy was nothing but a weak pain in the ass for the Reich to have as a partner.

1940 - President Franklin Roosevelt said the U.S. switching from "neutral" to "non-belligerent", meaning the U.S. would support the Allies without itself going to war against the Axis:  WWII.

This was a political way of saying the U.S. was going to stay on the sidelines a while longer, and FDR was trying to continue America's stance of ‘Non-Belligerent Neutrality’...This was an unacceptable situation, and the U.S. should never have gotten this deep into WWII without entering it.

I hate to admit it, but this is something we need to keep in mind when our allies don't come to our aid.

1943 - The Allies began bombing Germany around the clock:  WWII.

Germany Proper finally began to feel the pain it’s military had been giving the rest of Europe...It was overdue, and an awesome display of power.

Amazingly, modern-day Liberals beat on the U.S. for brutalizing German cities. Huh??

1967 - The Six Day War between Israel, Egypt, Syria Iraq and Jordan ended.

What a pathetic showing by the Arab 'powers,' and an equally weak display of Soviet armaments (used by the Arabs)...Never forget, the Arab-Israeli wars were also proxy wars between the U.S. and Soviet Union.

As a result of the war, Israel gained strategic lands (Gaza, West Bank, Golan Heights, Sinai Peninsula, etc.), humiliated the Arabs and set the stage for the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

1993 - Scientists announced they extracted genetic material from the preserved remains of an insect which lived when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

This should be great news, but we must always temper our excitement with the fear of what the Mengelians might do with such a find. I can already see a bug-headed-human-fetus being created...Just for kicks and grins.

1999 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled the city of Chicago went too far in its fight against street gangs by ordering police to break up groups of loiterers.

'Freedom of assembly,' aye? What a joke. This is just one of many Liberal jackass bastardizations of the First Amendment, which reads: “the right of the people peaceably to assemble.”

There is a huge difference, and when the 'peace' isn’t respected, neither should the right to 'assemble.'

This isn’t rocket science, but Liberal judges have twisted the Constitution so much the Founding Fathers wouldn’t even recognize their own document.
