THIS DAY IN HISTORY

January 8

1926 - Abdul-Aziz ibn Saud established the Kingdom of Hejaz - later renamed Saudi Arabia.

A country was created out of the desert wasteland...What a cruel irony their only valuable resource is the most important resource on Earth:  Oil.

And the world’s most irresponsible and lunatic people happen to control a large portion of the world's share of it.

1815 - The Battle of New Orleans:  War of 1812.  U.S. forces, led by General Andrew Jackson defeated the British in the last battle of the war.

The war ‘officially’ ended on December 24, 1814, but news of the peace treaty hadn’t reached the South yet...That's a good story, but not reality.

The truth is the Brits were hoping for a victory in New Orleans to use as a way of restarting the war, or at the very least to use as a bargaining tool against the U.S. in peace negotiations.

Instead the Brits got whooped, and it was beautiful for Jackson to slap the Brits around to the tune of 2,044 British casualties to only 71 for the U.S. troops...It was the last time the Brits returned to the U.S. with bad intentions.

1871 - Prussian troops began bombarding Paris:  Franco-Prussian War.

This became a reoccurring theme for the next 70-years between the Germans and French...Amazingly, they are friends now, but sooner or later the French will be Germany’s whipping-boy again.

1918 - President Wilson outlined his 'Fourteen Points for Peace':  World War I.

It all sounded nice, his idealistic plan for a world forever free from conflict, but the reality was (and always will be) the world isn’t a pretty place...The League of Nations was created out of Wilson’s Utopian pipe-dream, but the U.S. didn’t even join it, and WWII was less than 25-years away.

1954 - President Dwight Eisenhower proposed stripping convicted communists of their U.S. citizenship.

This was a move which would have been completely against the First Amendment, and never made it past the Supreme Court...He could have done more to destroy communism in America had he done more to destroy it internationally.

1964 - President Lyndon Johnson declared a 'War on Poverty.'

In order to crush poverty he increased welfare, which increased the 'political indentured servitude' of America’s poor and minorities by tying them to the Democrat Party...All along knowing these people would never be able to pull themselves out of their poor state as long as the Democrat Party was around to 'help keep them down.'

I have to admit it has been the greatest political strategy in American history, even though it's also been one of the most destructive social experiments in that same history.

1997 - The state of Arkansas put three men to death in the second triple execution since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976.

Gotta love a ‘triple’...It's good anytime a criminal scumbag is removed from this world. It's even better when three go at a time.

1998 - 'Unabomber' suspect Theodore Kaczynski tried to commit suicide just hours before stunning a packed courtroom by saying he wanted to be his own lawyer and argue he was sane. He appeared in court with a red mark on his neck and missing his undershorts, leading police to conclude he attempted to kill himself in his cell at the Sacramento County Jail. He was placed under security surveillance.

On the next day, they should have tossed a rope in his cell...Instead the state of California will be paying to incarcerate this piece of garbage for the rest of his life. What a sad joke.

1998:  World Trade Center bomber Rahmzi Ahmed Yousef was sentenced to life in prison.

Six people died and over a thousand were injured, yet this terrorist was given a life sentence instead of being executed.  Like Kaczynski, this case is a sad joke.

2002 – The 'No Child Left Behind Act,' was signed into law by President Bush.

Another case of 'Bad if (R) and Good if (D)'...Also, don't forget, this was a 'bi-partisan' bill, co-authored by two Republicans and two Democrats (one being Ted Kennedy).

The media and the Left love to snipe at this act, but if the same bill had been passed under Bill Clinton or Obama they’d be saying it is a great law.

2002 - The Bush administration sent a secret report to Congress, the 'Nuclear Posture Review,' which said the Pentagon needed to be prepared to use nuclear weapons against seven nations: China, Russia, Iraq, North Korea, Syria, Iran, and Libya.

The press and Congressional Democrats went nuts over this report...But it's a matter of National Defense, which should have been done long before this date.

The president’s first priority is protecting the nation. Neglecting to acknowledge our enemies, and finding ways to destroy them, would be a complete dereliction of duty...Something Democrats have become expert at.

December 24

1942 - The first powered flight of a V-1 cruise missile:  WWII.

This was the forefather of every modern rocket...Imagine if Hitler hadn’t shipped out or killed all of his Jewish scientists, and they invented the atomic bomb before the Americans? Which was very possible.

There is little doubt the Mad Corporal would have loaded them on the V-1’s and V-2’s...If the Germans had the time to perfect these weapons, the world would be a much different (more horrible) place than it is today.

1144 – Muslim forces re-captured much of the territory originally taken by the Christian Crusaders. This resulted in the Pope calling for a second Crusade.

The Perpetual War...I bet they never thought it would still be going almost 900-years later.

1814 - The War of 1812 officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent.

America firmly established its independence in this ‘second Revolutionary War’...Unfortunately for the Brits, word didn’t reach the South before American forces could wipe out their force in New Orleans.

Ok, this is popular mythology...The Brits in New Orleans knew perfectly well of the war's status, but the British government hoped to pull out a victory in the battle, which would have given them a stronger position to bargain or restart the war from.

In my point of view the Battle of New Orleans was a nice little way of saying ‘Don’t return, ya limey bastards.’

1865 - Several veterans of the Confederate Army formed a private social club in Pulaski, Tennessee, called the Ku Klux Klan.

A terrible organization, but an almost natural offshoot of the period...And my favorite Civil War general (for his skill and battlefield innovations, not viewpoints) soon became its first Grand Wizard: Nathan Bedford Forrest.

Oh by the way, these KKK clowns were primarily Democrats - Just as they were in the 20th Century, as well...Now they are just a couple hands full of nutters with no clout at all.

1943 - President Franklin Roosevelt appointed General Dwight Eisenhower as Supreme Commander of Allied forces for 'Operation Overlord':  WWII.

Ike was the perfect 'political general'...No other commander could have pulled off the European invasion as well.

Per normal, America was graced with the presence of ‘the right man, in the right place, at the right time.’

1946 – U.S. General MacNarney granted 800,000 'minor Nazis' amnesty.

We had a choice:  Remove all the Nazi's or leave Germany to be run by inexperienced leaders.  Under normal circumstances going with the new blood might have been the better choice, but circumstances were anything but normal...Never forget the Russian bear was in a feeding frenzy at this time, and we didn't have the luxury of allowing Germany to suffer as long as they deserved.

It's too bad we didn't follow these methods after removing Sadaam Hussein from power in Iraq...Things likely would have progressed much better if we had.

1968 - The 'Apollo Eight' astronauts (Lovell, Anders and Borman), orbiting the moon 250,000 miles from home, reading verses from their bible and transmitted a message to all of mankind calling for "peace on earth."

Oh my GOD! Liberal ‘separation of church and state’ nuts must have had spontaneous strokes and heart attacks.

2003 - Pakistan's President, General Pervez Musharraf agreed to step down as head of the armed forces by the end of 2004, part of a deal with the hard line Islamic opposition to end a long standoff which had stalled the nation's return to democracy. Musharraf also agreed to scale back some of the special powers he decreed himself after taking power in a 1999 military coup.

Never forget this is a country with nuclear weapons and advanced delivery systems...With millions of radical Islamists chomping at the bit trying to take control of them.

They can hide behind the facade of democracy, but the reality is the world cannot afford to allow a fundamentalist Pakistani leadership to evolve...Which is why we play patty-cake with the Paki Military and their crazy Taliban creation.

October 5

1813 - The Battle of the Thames: War of 1812.  Fought in Upper Canada, the British were soundly defeated, and their Indian ally, Tecumseh, was killed.

The battle is also known as the Battle of Moraviantown, and was a great victory for the American forces, because it reestablished U.S. control of the Northwest frontier...Also, the death of Tecumseh was a crushing defeat for the Brits because this chief was the glue which held the British-Indian alliance together.

1877 – The Nez Perce Wars ended when Chief Joseph surrendered to the U.S. Army.

"From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever." – Chief Joseph

1937 - President Franklin Roosevelt said: "The epidemic of world lawlessness is spreading," and he called for a "quarantine" of aggressor nations.

Roosevelt foresaw the disasters building in Europe and Asia, but didn't have the testicular fortitude to do anything about it...And his European counterparts were too wimpy as well.

So the world waited for the catastrophe to unfold.

1947 - In the first televised White House address, President Truman asked Americans to refrain from eating meat on Tuesdays and poultry on Thursdays to help stockpile grain for starving people in Europe.

Screw that!!! We saved their asses in WWII, and soon bailed them out with the Marshall Plan...Plus, I can't think of a better way to start an economic decline than to ask people to not spend their money.

1975 - Senator Frank Church charged the CIA with trying to kill Cuban President Fidel Castro during the administrations of three U.S. presidents.

I hope so...And am disgusted it hasn’t been attempted by every administration.

I’m sure this senator also bitched that Reagan was too tough on the Soviets...What a POS.

September 12

490 B.C. (Exact date is unknown, but it is assumed to be sometime between September 10-12) - The Battle of Marathon.  Athenian and Plataean hoplites commanded by General Miltiades drove back a Persian invasion force under General Datis.

Marathon is one of the most famous battles in history, and one which could have changed history had the Persians won...Instead the Athenians won, keeping the Greeks free from Persian rule, and reaping the glory of defeating the great empire.

The Athenians had approximately 10,000 troops, to the Persians 20,000+...Amazingly, the Athenians lost less than 200 troops, compared to over 6,000 for the Persians.

It must be noted, the Spartans missed out on the battle because they were too slow to understand the dire straits the Greeks were in. This lack of effort to show up in time for the battle was a terribly humiliating fact for the Spartans, and a rare case where the Athenians claimed hegemony in the Greek world...A fact which lead to the Pelopponesian War between Athens and Sparta - where the Spartans reclaimed their traditional role.

1814 - A British fleet under Sir Alexander Cochrane began the bombardment of Fort McHenry, the last American defense before Baltimore. As the sun rose the next day, Lawyer Francis Scott Key was amazed to see the American Flag still flying over the battered fort. This experience inspired Key to write the lyrics to 'The Star-Spangled Banner,' which he adapted to the tune of a well-known British drinking song:  War of 1812.

The Brits weren't necessarily trying to reclaim their former colonies, but they did want to let them know they were still under their thumb...The new nation wasn’t about to allow it to happen, though.

Because of this fact 'The Star-Spangled Banner' is a brilliant song, and one we can easily sing with passion and pride.

1918 - U.S. forces, led by General John J. Pershing, launched an attack on the German-occupied St. Mihiel salient north of Verdun, France:  WWI.

This was the first American battle in World War I, and they showed well..It wasn't long before the Axis surrendered, but had the Americans been in the war in 1914 it would have never lasted this long.

1919 - Adolf Hitler joined the German Worker’s Party.

Soon to become the National Socialist German Workers Party...Better known as the Nazi Party.

Oh, did you catch that 'socialist' thingy?

1938 - Adolf Hitler demanded self-determination for the Sudeten Germans in Czechoslovakia.

Hitler was looking for a fight and used this issue to get one...Instead the French and Brits simply handed him the Sudetenland.

Der Fuhrer was disappointed and disgusted to have this event end in peace, yet elated to see the pansies in the West show their true color: YELLOW!!

1943 - German paratroopers rescued Benito Mussolini from the hotel where he was being held by the Italian government:  WWII.

The Italians had to wait another year-and-a-half to hang Il Duce from a lamp-post.

1944 - U.S. Army troops entered Germany for the first time in World War II.

The route was on, and the only question left was who would get to Berlin first, the U.S. or the Soviets...Sadly it was the Ruskies.

1983 - The Soviet Union vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution deploring the shooting down of a Korean jetliner by a Soviet jet fighter on Sept. 1.

You didn’t read that wrong. The Soviets vetoed the plan to denounce themselves...Such is the ridiculousness of the United Nations.

September 11

2001 - The worst terrorist attack in American history occurred. Two planes crashed into New York City's World Trade Center, collapsing the Twin Towers. One plane crashed into the Pentagon. A fourth airliner crashed in a field in southwest Pennsylvania.

This was by far the worst day of my adult life. It haunts me to this day.

After the fall of the Soviet Union, the U.S. assumed it was safe, but it's foolish to ever assume such a thing...There is always another enemy, and as long as the U.S. is the world's hegemon there will always be others looking to knock us off our platform.

WE MUST ALWAYS BE AWARE OF OUR POSITION IN THE WORLD, AND MAKE SURE OUR ENEMIES ARE EQUALLY AWARE OF THIS POSITION - ALONG WITH OUR ABILITY AND WILLINGNESS TO DESTROY THEM!!

1297 – The Battle of Stirling Bridge.

The Scots, under William Wallace, amazingly, defeated the English invaders, who had a 5,000 to 15,000 man advantage...The Scots fought well, and kept their independence for a long time, but there was no way they could hold back the oncoming power of the English forever.

1709 – The Battle of Malplaquet: War of Spanish Succession.

Just another in the never-ending dynastic battles on the Continent, but it's worth mentioning because it was the bloodiest battle of the 18th Century - in Europe...A pretty big feat.

1777 - The Battle of Brandywine.  Troops commanded by General George Washington were crushed by the British under General Sir William Howe:  American Revolutionary War.

Brandywine was a terrible loss for the Revolutionaries, and allowed the Brits to capture Philadelphia...This caused the Continental Congress to flee Philly, and was the best opportunity the Brits had to end the revolution, but the American ring-leaders escaped and the war went on.

1814 - The Battle of Lake Champlain. The American Navy defeated the British:  War of 1812.

This battle is also known as the Battle of Plattsburgh, and was an extremely important battle in the history of the young nation.

At the time of the battle, the war was all but over and the Treaty of Ghent was being prepared to end the war...The importance of the battle is it ended any hopes the Brits had of gaining concessions from the U.S., and put the Americans in a even stronger position to negotiate from.

1857 - The Mountain Meadows Massacre: John D. Lee, angered over President Buchanan's order to remove Brigham Young from governorship of the Utah Territory, incited a band of Mormons and Indians to massacre a California-bound wagon train of 135.

At this time Utah wasn’t formally part of the U.S., and didn’t really want anything to do with the U.S...There are many possible reasons why Lee led this massacre, but the event did more to end Utah’s independence than any other.

It wasn't long before the U.S. government looked at Utah as a threat, instead of bizarre neighbors, and increased it’s military presence in the surrounding regions...The last thing Utah wanted.

1940 - Hitler ordered Operation Sealion - the invasion of Britain:  WWII.

Lucky for the world, Sealion never materialized - because the Battle of Britain failed so miserably for the Germans.

England has successfully resisted invasion of it’s homeland since 1066, but if any nation ever had the power to successfully invade it would have been this group of Germans.

It's impossible to imagine what would have happened if the Krauts successfully invaded England, because at this time there was no other nation standing up to the Nazi madmen...Needless to say, the failure of Operation Sealion to materialize is one of the turning-points of the war - and Western Civilization.

1941 - After German U-boats attacked three U.S. ships, President Franklin Roosevelt warned German and Italian warships away from American waters and ordered the U.S. Navy to shoot on sight:  WWII.

FDR should have entered the war in 1939...But it was only three months till his hand was forced.

Thankfully, the Brits were able to continue holding out in Europe.

1985 - Pete Rose cracked career hit number 4,192, eclipsing the record held by Ty Cobb.

I’m not a Pete Rose apologist and ’Charlie Hustle’ may be a degenerate gambler, but he sure could play ball...If the 'Roid Monsters' of the 1990’s make it in the Hall of Fame, Pete sure as Hell should, too.

So should Joe Jackson, by the way.

September 10

1823 - Simon Bolivar, leader in the wars for independence against Spain in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Bolivia, was named President of Peru, with dictatorial powers.

Bolivar was the great leader of the South American independence movement, and took his ‘natural place' as the new overlord of the region.

I hope you understand the importance of what I just said...Compare it to that of the American Revolution.

George Washington could have easily set himself up as King of the United States (and many were surprised he didn’t), but instead this great man chose to set the new nation on a greater path...Bolivar wasn't out of the norm - Washington was.

1349 - Jews who survived a massacre in Constance, Germany were burned to death.

'If at first you don't succeed...'

I bet you thought the Holocaust started with Nazi Germany.

1547 - The Battle of Pinkie Cleugh, Edinburgh: The Scots were defeated by the English, in a battle sparked by English demands that Edward VI, aged 10, should marry Mary Queen of Scots, aged 5.

Nice...Who in their right mind would force two children to marry?? Or go to war, when it didn’t happen?

1813 – The Battle of Lake Erie: War of 1812.

After defeating the British in this War of 1812 naval battle, Commodore Oliver H. Perry sent the famous message, "We have met the enemy, and they are ours."

Also of note, this was the first defeat for a modern British naval squadron.

1861 – The Battle of Carnifex Ferry, Virginia: U.S. Civil War.

The Confederates were forced to fall back in this battle, which was important because the ‘Virginians’ of this area were against seceding from the Union...And these ‘Virginians’ soon became the new state of West Virginia.

1913 - The Lincoln Highway opened, becoming the first paved coast-to-coast highway in the United States. It is now known as U.S. 30.

The beginning of the interstate highway system.

1914 - The Battle of the Marne ended: WWI.

The German offensive was stopped, and it took three more years before either side in the West saw an open battlefield again...Trench warfare became the mode of battle, and resulted in mass slaughter from the air, artillery and disease.

1919 - New York City welcomed home General John J. Pershing and 25,000 soldiers who'd served in the U.S. First Division during World War I.

Back in the day, when the military was universally looked at as ‘good guys’...Instead of the current situation Liberals have created - of hating the military.

1919 - The Treaty of Saint-Germain was signed by the victorious Allied powers and Austria. Parts of pre-war German Austria were ceded to Italy and Czechoslovakia, and Austria was forbidden to unite with Germany.

This treaty was one of the many seeds of WWII...Hitler used it as an excuse to claim much of Czechoslovakia, and as a means of recovering German and Austrian lands.

He completely ignored the 'forbidden' part of uniting Austria and Germany...As an Austrian himself, how could he not?

1952 - West Germany offered Israel $540 million in compensation for Nazi atrocities.

Lets do the math, again: $540,000,000 for 9,000,000 dead Jews = $60 per dead Jew...Even by 1950's money standards that seems a little low.

1979 - Four Puerto Rican nationalists imprisoned for a 1954 attack on the U.S. House of Representatives and a 1950 attempt on the life of President Truman were granted clemency by President Carter.

1. Why weren’t they executed?

2. What in the Hell did Carter let them out for?

1993 - First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton lashed out at what she called "stand pat, negative, nay-saying" opponents of health reform in an address to state legislators.

Americans didn't want to hear Hillary's scheme. What we had wasn't perfect; what she wanted was even worse...Even worse than hers is ObamaCare - a system which has done nothing but confuse the issue.

June 18

1815 - The Battle of Waterloo: British and Prussian forces defeated Napoleon.

The French Revolution and Napoleonic Age came to an end at Waterloo, and began a new day of British and Prussian/German hegemony in Europe (around the globe for the Brits)...The brilliant Emperor was finally defeated, and the names of Wellington and Blucher found their way into the realm of greatness in military history as a result of this victory.

I still can't believe they didn't execute Napoleon, however.

1538 - The Treaty of Nice: 'Peace' was agreed on by Charles V (Holy Roman Empire and Spain) and Francis I (France).

Those familiar with the period know this was a worthless piece of paper, because there were rarely consecutive days of peace between France and the Empire, let alone anything resembling a real peace...And the only reason Charles agreed to this peace was because he was feeling too much heat from the east in the Ottomans, and at home among his own German princes.

1812 - The War of 1812 began: The U.S. Congress declared war against Britain for repeated violations of American rights to the sea, and the incitement of Indians on the frontier.

The War of 1812 was nothing short of a continuation of the Revolutionary War. Is should be seen as a last ditch effort by the Brits to reclaim their former colonies, and a second chance for the former colonists to show they would never return to British rule, nor be treated like dogs by the Empire.

1878 - The Posse Comitatus Act passed, making it a felony to willfully use "any part of the Army...to execute the laws" except where expressly authorized by the Constitution or by act of Congress.

When used properly, the Army has more than enough on its plate, and domestic law enforcement should be left to the various police agencies (including the FBI).

That said, the law was revised in 1981 "to permit increased Department of Defense support of drug interdiction and other law enforcement activities," and revised again after 9/11/01 to increase the military's role in the War on Terror...Lets hope we never have to use our military on our soil, but that day is always a possibility.

1900 - Empress Tsu-tse ordered the Boxers to expel all foreigners from China.

This order turned out very badly for the Chinese, who were defeated by the Western powers, lost many of its traditional territories, and handed over its last shreds of hegemony in the East to Japan.

1940 - Winston Churchill urged perseverance among the British people so future generations would remember "this was their finest hour."

“...What General Weygand called the Battle of France is over. I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this Island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour.'"

The Brits never wanted to see Churchill in the seat of power - until they needed to fight for their very existence.  Then they knew they had to bring him in...And fight is exactly what he did - alone, until the Germans and Japanese were ignorant enough to bring the Russians and U.S. into the war.
